Description
USRDS is a national data system that collects, analyzes, and distributes information about end stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States. It includes continuous mandated reporting from physicians who treat ESRD. The major source of ESRD patient information for USRDS is the CMS Renal Beneficiary and Utilization System (REBUS)/Program Management and Medical Information System (PMMIS) database. The REBUS/PMMIS database contains demographic, diagnostic, and treatment history information for all Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD. The database has been expanded to include non-Medicare patients. In 2003, the database was transitioned to an Oracle relational database and is now known as the Renal Management Information System (REMIS).
These CMS-supplied data are supplemented by data from the Social Security Administration, OPTN Transplant Database, U.S. Census Bureau, local and national ESRD provider databases, and international ESRD registries.
