a Consistent with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Pediatric Quality Indicators software, diabetes must be the principal diagnosis and short-term complications include ketoacidosis, hyperosmolarity, or coma. Transfers from other institutions and obstetric admissions are excluded.
b Rates are adjusted by age and gender using the total U.S. resident population for 2000 as the standard population.
