a. The composite of eight recommended care components for surgery patients includes: (1) providing antibiotic within 1 hour of surgery (SCIP-1), (2) providing appropriate antibiotic to help prevent infection (SCIP-2), (3) discontinuing antibiotic on time (SCIP-3), (4) keeping blood sugar level under good control right after surgery for cardiac surgery patients (SCIP-4), (5) removing hair from the surgical area using a safer method (SCIP-6), (6) ordering thromboembolism prophylaxis for prevention of blood clots after certain surgeries (SCIP-VTE1), (7) providing appropriate venous thromboembolism prophylaxis within 24 hours prior to and after surgery (SCIP-VTE2), and (8) placing surgery patients on beta blocker therapy prior to arrival and during postoperative period (SCIP-Card2).
