Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Minimum Data Set. The 2003 data were downloaded from http://www.medicare.gov/Download/DownloadDB.asp in April 2004. The 2002 data were downloaded from http://www.medicare.gov/NHCompare/Include/DataSection/Questions/SearchCriteria.asp in November 2002.

Denominator

Medicare beneficiary chronic care residents with a valid target assessment.

Numerator

Residents with moderate pain at least daily, or horrible or excruciating pain at any frequency on the target assessment.

Comments

Rate is risk adjusted using resident level covariates.

Excludes admission assessments, assessments with inconsistent or missing responses regarding the measure. See CMS website for details: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/Manuals/.

The 2002 estimates reflect care delivered in quarter 2, from April 1 to June 30, 2002. The 2003 estimates reflect care delivered in quarter 3, from July 1, 2003 to September 30, 2003.
