Emergency Severity Index Handbook

Nicki Gilboy , RN, M.S., CEN

Nicki Gilboy, one of the principal authors of The Emergency Severity Index, Version 4: Implementation Handbook, is the Emergency Department educator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where ESI has been in place since 1999. Ms. Gilboy has been a member of the ESI Research Team since its inception and has trained hundreds of nurses in the United States and abroad on the benefits and efficient utilization of ESI. She continues to actively participate in ongoing ESI research projects.

Paula Tanabe, Ph.D., RN

Paula Tanabe, one of the principal authors of The Emergency Severity Index,  Version 4: Implementation Handbook, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Studies, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. Dr. Tanabe has been a member of the ESI Research Team since 2000 and led the implementation of ESI at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Tanabe has conducted several research projects using ESI and was the primary investigator for the research project that resulted in the development of ESI Version 4. She has also lectured extensively on ESI and has participated in the training of emergency nurses throughout the United States.
