Presenters in this session offered examples of diverse private-sector integrated health information
systems. They discussed how and why decisions regarding system architecture, user access, and
system capacity were made.
Larry Wall said that public accountability drives much of what they do.
CHA's integrated data system also supports its roles in advocacy, quality, competition, cost
containment, and public relations.
Len Kirschner described the origin of the medication management information system (MMIS) and ongoing issues for information systems for the
Federal government, States, and local governments. He compared the past, present, and future of
MMIS.
David Swan offered advice on how to implement and manage change in and to information systems.
He advised starting small and compartmentalizing tasks to the degree possible.
