Assuring Confidentiality

This panel reviewed implementation options and issues related to maintaining confidentiality inintegrated health information systems from both the public and private perspectives.
Dr. Cochran
indicated that one of the goals of his organization is to address consumer concerns. Workshop
participants viewed excerpts of a filmed focus group which demonstrated that the fears and concerns
of consumers are real and strongly held. Dr. Cochran also explained the importance of
communicating to staff that privacy protection is a priority.
Ms. Korn extensively reviewed current
software and hardware options for guarding confidentiality.
Both presenters discussed the
development of access policies and information ownership issues, as well as specific resources
(e.g., encryption, firewalls) for implementing privacy policies.
