The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research is sponsoring a conference to discuss and identify critical
gaps and future research needs regarding outcomes and effectiveness research. This research focuses on the end
results of medical treatments and addresses such questions as: Which interventions work best? Does it work in
the real world? Does it provide the best value? The conference will also review AHCPR's research
accomplishments in this area.
The two-day conference, featuring over 15 experts, is entitled "Outcomes Research: Engine for Quality
Improvement." The conference is designed for public- and private-sector health care providers, policymakers,
purchasers, and health services researchers. Specific conference goals are to: (1) present selected
accomplishments from previous outcomes and effectiveness research, (2) discuss contemporary challenges in
outcomes research, and (3) explore the future of outcomes and effectiveness research in both the public and
private sectors.
The following plenary speakers will participate: Keynote speaker: George D. Lundberg, M.D.,
Editor, Journal of the American Medical Association; John E. Wennberg, M.D., M.P.H., Director, Center
for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences, Dartmouth Medical School; Edward H. Wagner, M.D., M.P.H.,
Director, Center for Health Studies and The W.A. Sandy MacColl Institute for Healthcare Innovation, Group
Health Cooperative of Puget Sound; Marie Michnich, Dr.P.H., Senior Associate Executive Vice-President,
American College of Cardiology; A. Eugene Washington, M.D., M.Sc., Professor and Chair, Department of
Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and Principal Investigator, Medical Effectiveness Research
Center for Diverse Populations, University of California, San Francisco.
