AHCPR Accepting Health Services Research Training Applications

The Federal government's Agency for Health Care Policy and
Research (AHCPR) announced today that it is accepting
applications for training grants under the National Research
Service Award (NRSA) and Institutional Training Innovation
Incentive Award programs. AHCPR expects to award up to $4.5
million for first-year funding of training projects in fiscal
year 1998, depending on the availability of funds. Letters of
intent for both types of awards must be received by July 10,
1997, and applications by September 23, 1997.
AHCPR awards NRSA institutional training grants to eligible
institutions to support predoctoral and postdoctoral health
services research training for qualified individuals selected by
the institutions.
Predoctoral research training must lead to the Ph.D. degree or a
comparable research doctoral degree. Postdoctoral research
training is for individuals who have a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., or
comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign
institution.
The agency expects to award up to $3.5 million in fiscal year
1998 to support first-year funding of approximately 15 to 24 NRSA
projects. The maximum funding period is five years. The earliest
anticipated award date is May 1, 1998.
For the Institutional Training Innovation Incentive Award
program, AHCPR anticipates awarding up to $1 million in fiscal
year 1998 to support approximately 20 projects to design and
implement new models for training health services researchers.
The goals are to create innovative approaches to prepare
investigators for addressing emerging issues in health care
policy and delivery, and to respond to the changing analytical
needs of health care providers, payers and policymakers.
Applications for this program may be submitted by domestic non-profit private and public institutions with established programs
in predoctoral and postdoctoral health services research
training. The earliest anticipated award date is July 1, 1998.
