Administrator Clifton R. Gaus, Sc.D., today announced that Lisa
Simpson, M.B., B.Ch., has been appointed as Deputy Administrator
of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR). Dr.
Simpson, a pediatrician and public health administrator, has
been serving as Acting Deputy Administrator since August of 1995,
and previously was a senior advisor to the Administrator.
As Deputy Administrator, Dr. Simpson will share with the
Administrator the responsibility for the leadership, direction,
and management of the programs of AHCPR, and help ensure that the
activities of the Agency are coordinated with other Federal
agencies and private-sector organizations. During her tenure at
AHCPR, Dr. Simpson has promoted research that helps physicians
improve the quality and effectiveness of medical practice,
fosters partnerships between patients and clinicians in medical
decision making, and focuses on issues related to children.
"Dr. Simpson's understanding of the role of health services
research in improving health care quality as well as her
knowledge of medical and public health issues make her eminently
qualified to serve in this capacity," said Dr. Gaus. "Throughout
her career, she has displayed the vision, knowledge, and skills
needed to design, implement, and direct programs responsive to
the constantly changing health care system."
Prior to her service at AHCPR, Dr. Simpson was a senior policy
analyst in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health. She
was fellow at the Institute for Health Policy Studies, University
of California, San Francisco, and was the director of Maternal
and Child Health for the State of Hawaii. Dr. Simpson also is an
adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Public
Health.
Dr. Simpson is board certified in pediatrics. She received a
doctorate of medicine (M.B., B.Ch.) from Trinity College, Dublin,
Ireland.
