Outcomes and Effectiveness Research Priorities: AHCPR Calls for Suggestions

The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research is seeking
suggestions for research priorities
related to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and/or management
of common, costly clinical
conditions. The call for research priorities—published in
today's Federal
Register—is intended for health care providers as well
as researchers.
The suggestions will be used to develop a new research strategy
for AHCPR's medical treatment
effectiveness program, which was established in 1989 in response
to national concern about the
adequacy of scientific evidence for many widely used medical and
surgical procedures and about
research findings of significant unexplained treatment
variations. AHCPR-funded outcomes and
effectiveness research determines which clinical interventions
are effective, cost-effective and
appropriate; develops methods and data for effectiveness
research, studies the dissemination of
clinical findings and evaluates the impact of findings on
clinical practice and outcomes.
To date, AHCPR has funded effectiveness research on a wide range
of conditions and procedures,
including acute myocardial infarction, stroke prevention, chronic
low back pain, localized breast
cancer, childbirth and pelvic inflammatory disease, through large
multidisciplinary research
projects and smaller-scale studies.
Following the closing date for receipt of suggestions, AHCPR will
develop a preliminary list of
research priorities, convene an expert panel to review them in
relation to the agency's criteria for
selection of topics, and identify which areas can most feasibly
and efficiently be studied by
outcomes research methods.
Suggestions for research priorities should be sent no later than
July 29 to Carolyn Clancy, M.D.,
