  • Workshop and Panel Session: Facing Challenging Situations When Assessing the Strength of Evidence in Systematic Reviews.

This session is being considered for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
    Session Number: 29
    Track ID: C
Session Title: Workshop and Panel Session: Facing Challenging Situations When Assessing the Strength of Evidence in Systematic Reviews
Session Track: Promoting Effective Communication and Coordination of Care
Session Description: Assessing the strength of evidence is an important feature of any systematic review. It tells users of systematic reviews how much confidence they can have in the underlying evidence answering a particular question of interest. The advantage of systems used by AHRQ's Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPC) and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approaches is the explicit presentation of the reasoning behind grading the strength of evidence. Nevertheless, the process involves subjective judgments and can be challenging. Based on hands-on examples, participants in this workshop will discuss challenging situations when grading the strength of evidence with representatives from GRADE and the EPC program. The session requires a basic understanding of assessing the strength of evidence.

    Moderator:Nancy Berkman, RTI International
    Speakers:Nancy Santesso, McMaster University
     Nancy Berkman, RTI International

This session will describe approaches that have been used by the two programs to engage diverse stakeholders in their research, and the impact of stakeholder participation on the quality and relevance of products and outputs. Speakers will also identify challenges and future directions for improving the quality of engagement, focus on challenges related to including important and often underrepresented constituencies, and address obstacles to obtaining meaningful stakeholder input. Presenters will be EPC and DEcIDE colleagues.

  • Key Issues in Updating Systematic Reviews: Lessons for the Field.

    Session Number: 27
    Track ID: C
Session Title: Key Issues in Updating Systematic Reviews: Lessons for the Field
Session Track: Promoting Effective Communication and Coordination of Care
Session Description: Systematic reviews reflect the state of research, usually for a defined clinical question at the time they are completed. However, there is no consensus on determining when the reviews need to be updated. Based on the Evidence-based Practice Centers Program at AHRQ, this session will address questions such as the following: How frequently should a report be assessed for updating? What are the signals that indicate that a topic is in need of updating? Once updated, in what format should the updated information be presented and do different stakeholders (physicians and policymakers) prefer one over another?
