Hospital Readmissions: Not Just a Problem for Medicare. Many hospitals are working hard at lowering readmissions among Medicare patients. However, another patient group, adults covered by Medicaid, have readmission rates that are just as high, or even higher, than Medicare patients, according to 2012 data from AHRQ. This bar graph compares 30-day hospital readmission rates for patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid for five conditions: acute myocardial infarction (17.8% for Medicare, 18.4% for Medicaid), congestive heart failure (29.4% for Medicare, 24.4% for Medicaid), pneumonia (13.9% for Medicare vs. 18.1% for Medicaid), hip replacement (9.0% for Medicare, 8.9% for Medicaid), and knee arthroplasty (7.5% for Medicare, 5.2% for Medicaid).
