Affordable Care Act and Medicaid Resources

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act allows all Americans the opportunity to shop for quality health coverage that is affordable, and not be denied or charged more because they have a pre–existing condition. 

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a way for uninsured Americans and their families to purchase health insurance in one place. Coverage offered through the Marketplace includes a range of options so consumers can pick a plan that best meets their needs, the needs of their family, and their budget. Outside of the Open Enrollment period, individuals can see if they qualify for Special Enrollment here.

Additionally, millions are eligible for Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Medicaid and CHIP enrollment is year–round and is not subject to an open enrollment period. Eligible individuals can enroll at any time and get coverage right away.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is mandated by Congress to conduct rigorous reviews of scientific evidence to create evidence–based recommendations for preventive services that may be provided in the primary care setting. The work of the USPSTF is recognized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Under the law, preventive services with a Task Force grade of A or B must be covered without cost–sharing (e.g., copayment or deductible) under new health insurance plans or policies.
