Fact Sheet: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Investments in Comparative Effectiveness Research for Training and Career Development

The Need: More Researchers

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has traditionally built capacity for comparative effectiveness research by providing institutional support to increase the intellectual and organizational capacity for larger scale programs in comparative effectiveness and to allow fellowship training opportunities.

Given the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) investment in evidence generation of comparative effectiveness research, AHRQ will need to build upon its existing efforts to cultivate talent in comparative effectiveness research.

The Solution: Training and Career Development

Recovery Act funding will support the career development of clinicians and research doctorates focusing their research on the synthesis, generation, and translation of new scientific evidence and analytic tools for comparative effectiveness research. In particular, the goal will be to enhance the research and methodological capacity for conducting and improving the quality of systematic review, retrospective studies, and clinical trials in comparative effectiveness research and the development of data sources and other aspects of the research infrastructure.

Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Program Awards (up to $15 million) will be used to develop independent scientists. Institutional Research Training Grants (up to $5 million) will be used to support predoctoral and postdoctoral research training. The total amount awarded and total number of training grants will depend on the number, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
