Project Description: This project has three aims:

Develop a content valid survey that can be used to measure high performance work systems (HPWS) practices in a hospital setting.
Relate HPWS practices to patient safety and quality in the healthcare industry, which will allow for the estimation of internal consistency, construct validity, and criterion validity.
Determine the cost effectiveness of implementing different HPWS practices to determine which ones provide the most impact on patient safety and quality per dollar spent on HPWS practices.

Career Goals: Dr. Etchegaray is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He is also a Senior Improvement Advisor in the Institute for Healthcare Excellence at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The grantee holds Adjunct Faculty positions at the University of Phoenix, Walden University, and the University of Maryland University College. Dr. Etchegaray received his PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Houston. He would like to conduct rigorous research that will inform the patient safety community about organizational factors that will improve patient safety.

Progress to Date: A systematic review of the literature has been completed to understand how previous researchers across all industries, including health care, have conceptualized and measured the concept of HPWS. The review is being revised for journal submission. A survey was created aimed at identifying which HPWS dimensions are viewed as most important by health care executives

Future Plans: The survey will be reviewed by executives in the health care system and by the grantee’s mentor and consultants.
