Introduction
This is a comprehensive list of research projects
funded by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR)
under the Medical Treatment Effectiveness Program
(MEDTEP), from the inception of that program in December 1989
through December 1995. MEDTEP projects address the effectiveness
and cost effectiveness of health care services
available for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common
clinical conditions. Most MEDTEP research addresses a specific
clinical condition and assesses the outcomes of various
pertinent health care services or procedures. Some studies
address more general questions related to variations in clinical
practice, factors that influence clinical decisions or patient
preferences, the use of clinical guidelines and other decision
supports, pertinent databases, or the development of new methods
and measures.
Projects are categorized under
Clinical Studies (with subcategories),
Guideline Implementation and Evaluation,
and Methods and Measures. Within each
category, projects are in alphabetical order by the name of the
principal investigator. Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT)
projects and PORT IIs are so designated. Because some projects
are pertinent to more than one category, readers with special
interests are strongly encouraged to peruse all the projects.
For each project, we present the grant or contract number,
project title, name and institution of the principal
investigator, project start and completion dates, and a very
brief description. For those projects that have been completed, executive summaries and final
reports may be available through the National Technical Information Service.
