CERT Researcher Engages Nurses To Address Low Health Literacy

Extensive research shows that people who have low health literacy have poorer health outcomes and higher medical costs. Carolyn Dickens, a nurse practitioner at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a member of the Northwestern University CERT, is challenging nurses to help reverse this trend.

The Joint Commission requires that a fall risk assessment be conducted on every patient when admitted to a hospital and that a fall-prevention care plan be put in place. Involving Primary Care Patients and Their Physicians in Pragmatic Clinical Trials: High-Tech Interactive Tools Aid Study Recruitment

In a study recently published in Patient Preference and Adherence the researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Deep South Musculoskeletal Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics assessed the feasibility of using physician offices and novel, high-tech, interactive tools to screen patients with osteoporosis for a hypothetical pragmatic clinical trial. Their findings are now paving the way for future studies of these tools in the informed consent and randomization processes.
