The Hospital Quality Alliance
The development and implementation of the CAHPS Hospital Survey is part of a larger effort known as the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA).
Goals of the HQA
The goals of the HQA include the following:
- Provide useful and valid information about hospital quality to the public;
- Foster quality improvement in hospitals;
- Give hospitals a clear sense of public reporting expectations; and
- Begin to standardize data and data collection mechanisms.
Participants in the HQA
The HQA is a public-private partnership led by:
- The American Hospital Association;
- The Federation of American Hospitals; and
- The Association of American Medical Colleges.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services participates through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Other participants include accrediting organizations and provider and consumer organizations such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), National Quality Forum (NQF), American Medical Association (AMA), American Nurses Association, Consumer-Purchaser Disclosure Project, AARP, AFL-CIO, and the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI).
