Methods: participating clinics
- Rural primary care clinics with minimum of two providers were recruited
- None had pre-existing electronic health records
- Eighteen clinics randomly assigned to two groups
- Early implementation (launch in year 1)
- Delayed implementation (launch in year 2)
- Post-launch, 2 clinics closed
